TRIO SUBTONIC

TRIO SUBTONIC in Beaumont.
This portland based trio evolved from a long time collaboration between keyboardist composer, Galen Clark and drummer/percussionist, Jesse Brooke. After spending the winter of 2005 in Brazil to study traditional rhythms, Jesse and Galen returned to Portland and formed Trio Subtonic and eventually teamed up with local bass phenom, Bill Athens. The resulting sound infuses Brazilian rhythms, hip hop, funk and jazz elements with original grooves and the compositions of Galen Clark. The group combines creative compositions with a heavy emphasis on improvisation and a proclivity to groove. The most recent collaboration includes DJ Papercuts, from Portland's own live hip hop group, Quivah. Trio Subtonic released their first full length CD, "The Aqueous," July 19th, which features DJ Papercuts on several tracks. "The Aqueous" also includes a track featuring Sonja Myklebust on Cello.
Locations: Friday, May 23rd 2008: from 8 PM to 11PM.

LE PLACARD AT BEAUMONT

FESTIVAL DE CANNES AT BEAUMONT.
For the Cannes Festival, come and watch a French movie with English subtitles at NO COST: "Le Placard" 5/22/08 at 7:30pm.
Comedy. It's Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener" with a twist when Daniel Auteuil (as a milquetoast accountant) is about to get fired from his job for literally being a bore. At the last minute, a neighbor concocts a "new life" for Auteuil as an out-of-the-closet (read: intriguing) homosexual, and suddenly everything changes. Gérard Depardieu co-stars as a homophobic officemate who may be masking a few feelings of his own.

OYSTERS AND JAZZ

THE FEMME FATALE OF FUNK

MS. LEAH HINCHCLIFF --She has been called the “Femme Fatale of Funk,” by The Olympian, Newspaper. Pat Ferris of HOTBANDS says, “She is definitely the funkiest bass player I've seen in the entire country in the past 2 years! I'm also a bassist and can tend to be more critical than most people about how a band sounds, but I was more than humbled by her playing.” (www.hotbands.com) Leah Hinchcliff has been a professional musician for over 20 years and is widely recognized as one of the NW’s premier bassists. As a first call studio musician she has recorded with many of the NW’s top recording artists including Swamp Mama Johnson, Nicole Campbell, Mark Bosnian (Nu Shooz, Body & Soul) and Soul Vaccination and Voodoo BBQ. As a member of the successful Indie band Swamp Mama Johnson -- voted Seattle’s Best Band (1999) -- she toured North America, sold over an amazing 40,000 records (which can be heard on radio stations around the world!) and carved out her niche in the NW as a sought after and respected musician. Leah has backed up rock and roll legend Bo Diddley as well as emerging national artist Tracy Grammer. She is equally comfortable on stage as in the studio and has been proud to participate in many festivals including The Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, The Fender/Catalina Island Blues Festival, and BluesStock (Memphis) and has also been seen on the television staple Oregon Today with Swamp Mama Johnson and folk singer/songwriter Tracy Grammer. Most weekends and several weeknights she can be heard fronting her own band, Voodoo BBQ (www.voodoobbqband.com), with her soulful voice and funky bass, or holding down the bottom edge with Portland’s premier soul band, Soul Vaccination (www.soulvax.com), and now with her renewed interest in jazz she is proud to be a member of Swamp Cactus, bassist for Portland Jazz Vocalist’s Workshop, The Quadraphonnes (Portlands’ premier all Woman Sax Quartet) and backing local jazz luminaries many nights of the week. Her original music is heard on film soundtracks, websites and radio stations around the world.
