A JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH POPULAR MUSIC

A Journey through French Popular Music of the 20th Century...
Bonjour,
By performing in cafés, clubs and festivals while living in France, I have played many covers of French artistslike Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Edith Piaf, Serge Gainsbourg, Cabrel, etc...Since arriving in the USA morethan a year ago, I still enjoy playing these same songs to an American speaking audience; always explainingbefore hand the historical, creative and cultural context during which these tunes were played. People love it!I also gave a talk for the Alliance Française (a Portland organization for Francophiles) where I went throughFrench popular music of the 20th Century, illustrating it through live songs.Coming from a family background where I felt the importance of education (my mother is a recently retired 30year English teacher and my younger brother is today a middle school teacher), I was also looking for ways to getinvolved with community and school events in Portland. Knowing the value of music, especially in a time ofbudget cuts, I thought it would be a good idea to share this knowledge I have gathered over the years with youngstudents. The project I have proposed to Lincoln High School and this school's community is a 2 day/3 hour course (oncein French and once in English) taking students on a journey through French popular music of the 20th Century. This class would take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm and would show how musiciansare influenced by the era in which they live in.It starts in 1900 with the building of the Eiffel Tower and the challenges facing this new century. Next we wouldexamine how World War I has influenced French music (the American GIs brought Jazz to Paris), whyJosephine Baker was so popular with her song « J'ai deux amours » during the 1930's and how censorshipoperated during the second World War in a divided country occupied by the Nazis. After this devastating conflict, new artists emerged mostly from Saint Germain des Près, a creative neighborhood of Paris. Then during the 60'smany French artists were fascinated by Rock N' Roll and copied it as much as they could. It was the Yéyés era...Amercian popular music such as Disco or even Hip Hop has always inspired French artists. I'm sure students would be fascinated to learn about all the « musical bridges » that exist between those two cultures. Being of dualcitizenship (my father is French and my mother American) this inspires me even more to talk about it.To illustrate this course and make it interactive I would play live songs with my guitar of French artists (since1900 up to today) live with my guitar. I would also show videos of other musicians. To encourage audience participation I would perform one or two songs with musicians from Lincoln high school.I hope this project motivates you as much as it does me.Kind regards,Eric John Kaiser http://www.ericjohnkaiser.com/
