TASTING 2002 BORDEAUX

2002 Chateau Le Bourdillot
65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.
This medium to full bodied wine shows refreshing notes of redcurrants and plums as well as cassis, bitter chocolate and a hint of gun smoke. The hand picked estate grown grapes were destemmed, crushed and cold soaked before being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks over a period of five to seven days. The wine was then transferred to French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, for malolactic conversion and 12 months' ageing. The wine was bottled without fining or filtering.

2002 Chateau Haut-Chaigneau
Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Located in the commune of Neac, Haut-Chaigneau is one of the largest, most beautiful estates in Lalande de Pomerol. Wine was made here as long ago as the 15th century. This ancient vineyard, rediscovered by Andre Chatonnet, is currently planted with the finest premium grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon). Each vineyard plot is harvested only when it has reached optimum maturity. The wine is slowly and naturally barrel-aged in a unique underground cellar. Haut-Chaigneau is universally appreciated for its impressively consistent and attractive style. The chateau's steady progress over the past few years has unquestionably made it a benchmark in Lalande de Pomerol. Robert Parker says of this wine: "An elegant, stylish effort with considerable class and personality, this is a good, solild, attractive, mid-weight, dark ruby-colored 2001 offering notes of sweet vanilla, black cherry fruit, currants, and cocoa. It is best drunk over the next 5-6 years." -Robert Parker.

PAPILLON: CA VA VOLER !!!

Music in Beaumont Village this Saturday! (Starts at 7pm).
From Portland, Oregon, Swing Papillon is a quintet rooted in the tradition of gypsy jazz and the Hot Club of France. Originally a trio, Swing Papillon has now added Jason Okamoto (Nylon String Guitar) for a whole new direction in the progression of this beautiful music. Bryan Darby (Lead Guitar) has been into gypsy jazz long before the craze and it shows with his Django-like lines and machine gun tremolos. Also newly added, James Mason (Violin) is a truly remarkable soloist and has played alongside such greats as Andreas Oberg and Robin Nolan. Hyung Nam (Rhythm Guitar) pumps out the time with a joyous smile and you can set your watch by his tempo. Lastly, Michael Papillo (Double Bass), dubbed Papillon by Robin Nolan , has adopted a few of the gypsy guitar techniques to the double bass and is a pleasure to watch and hear. Together the quintet is completed and you can truly tell when you hear them that they have come to play and enjoy doing so.
Come and listen to the smooth sounds of Michael Papillon this Saturday night at our Beaumont Village location. For a preview of the Michael Papillon sound, visit his MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/lachodrom

LARRIVET HAUT BRION TASTING

Chateau Larrivet Haut-Brion 2004
"Les Demoiselles"

2004 Les Demoiselles Rouge
50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon.
A moderately deep colour, maturity at the rim already, with a little evolution also apparent, with some tobacco notes among the other mineral elements. Nice, fresh, light, a little compact texture through the midpalate, but otherwise rather soft and open. Nicely balanced though. Ripe, approachable, in fact ready now.

2004 Les Demoiselles Blanc
50% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Semillon.
Some new oak and notes of fennel on the nose, lovely, open and fresh, a touch green, some green capsicum, but a rounded, harmonious character nevertheless. Full, flavoursome, a touch creamy, but green like the nose. Chalky, shellfish crispness, certainly fresh and clean. Uncomplicated.

TASTING CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE

Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2004

2004 Maitre de la Chapelle Rouge
83% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre, 2% Counoise.
Generous tannins with aromas of liquorice, red fruit, black currant, blackberry along with rich spices. Lovely elegance, well-balanced. An excellent year, a wine to kept.
TASTING SUGGESTIONS: Best between 2005 and 2010. To taste at around 18°C. Open the bottle 1 hour before tasting. Can be served with red meats (such as lamb) and game (woodcock). It goes particularly well with stews or meat in sauce and aged cheese.

2004 Maitre de la Chapelle Blanc
60% White Grenache, 20% Clairette, 20% Bourboulenc.
The 2004 vintage is particularly rich with notes of crystallized fruit and white flowers. Full-bodied with a mineral nose. In the mouth it is well-balanced, fresh with a touch of acidity.
TASTING SUGGESTIONS: Best between 2005 and 2008 To be served at a temperature between 8 and 12°C. Open the bottle an hour before tasting. Excellent as an aperitif, it is also a perfect match with fish, seafood, white meat such as veal and goat's cheese.

JAZZ WITH MATT SCHIFF

Thankfully, there are still guys like Matt Schiff around who maintain the honored tradition of jazz guitar. This CD gives Matt the chance to strut his stuff unadorned by other instrumentation, and he makes the most of it. The tunes are almost all classics of the jazz repertoire. If you dug the solo outings of, say, Joe Pass , then you're going to find a lot to like in the solo adventures by Portland 's Matt Schiff.

REVOILA TIM

Tim Connell is back this Saturday at our Beaumont Village location.

A graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist with over twenty years professional performance experience, Tim has been immersed in a variety of musical styles since he first began classical piano lessons at age seven.
While working as a pianist and bassist in Boston, Tim delved deeply into the traditional Irish music of his youth, studying with renowned composer Michael O'Suilleabhain and master flutist Meabh Ni Fhuarthain. This work led him to the mandolin, and also to New England Conservatory, where he studied classical mandolin with Robert Sullivan, Jewish traditional music with klezmer guru Hankus Netsky, and modern improvisation with Ran Blake, receiving his Masters degree in 1997. While at NEC, Tim first heard the recordings of the great Brazilian choro mandolinist, Jacob do Bandolim, which led him to study this music with Brazilian choro masters Paulo Sa and Hamilton de Holanda, and with the legendary American mandolinist Mike Marshall. Tim currently lives in Portland, Oregon and performs choro and gypsy jazz with Rio Con Brio and Clambake, Irish music with The Yellers, Portuguese fado with Bossa do Fado, classical and Latin music with Toscana, and original compositions with Terracoustic. His study of Brazilian and Irish music, combined with his many years as a bassist and pianist have helped Tim synthesize a personal style on the mandolin which is harmonically advanced, rhythmically diverse and brimming over with sparkling ornamentation and romantic intensity.

FORGERON CELLARS

Forgeron is the French word for blacksmith as our winery/tasting room was the former site of a blacksmith shop. The word "Forgeron" also has a slightly different meaning in French, referring to artisans who build with their hands combining experience with an extensive knowledge of their trade. This is the vision that Marie-Eve Gilla, part owner and winemaker, brings to the winery each day by crafting complex, food friendly wines from vineyards chosen for their maturity and flavor profile.
