Now fearlessly expanding their vision to include performances for people they've never even met and, notorious for their rotating cast of guest soloists.

MATT SCHIFF

Thankfully, there are still guys like Matt Schiff around who maintain the honored tradition of jazz guitar. This CD gives Matt the chance to strut his stuff unadorned by other instrumentation, and he makes the most of it. The tunes are almost all classics of the jazz repertoire. If you dug the solo outings of, say, Joe Pass , then you're going to find a lot to like in the solo adventures by Portland 's Matt Schiff.

KACY COLLEEN & TONY PACINI

KACY COLLEEN

After a 5 year stint studying and working in LA, Colleen returned to Portland and formed a duo with partner Dale Lawrence. Calling themselves "Nouveau 2" initially, the team eventually dropped the name but expanded the instrumentation of the group, often including flute or saxophone. It was in partnership with Dale that Kacy's first CD was recorded.
In addition to recording and performing, Kacy Colleen created "Jazz Notes," a special feature for local jazz station, KMHD. Colleen researched, recorded and produced a series of audio "portraits" of some of the greatest jazz artists. These two-minute biographies were layered over original music written and performed by Dale Lawrence.
Over the years her concerts have included a promotional tour of California, the Portland Mayor's Ball, the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz, North by Northwest, and performances at many of the Northwest's best jazz venues. She has continued to build listener support with favorable press, radio air play, her mailings and sales of the recordings.

BLUES WITH LEW JONES

LEW JONES

In early 2000 I began work on my CD 'Sublimation' with Curt Cobain's mentor Jeremy Wilson from the Dharma Bums. That alone got the CD press. It was finished in late 2002 with a huge crowd at Conan's Pub. A media success and several songs radio ready to be hits. The other Cd released was a live acoustic set recorded by Josh Ellison of Living Room Records. It was called "American Folkie' and did very well with fans local and overseas thanks to the track "Summer's Ghost" which made The Rainbow Sampler aka Poet Man Records out of Kentucky. I received requests from Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and great deal of international airplay. In 2003 I opened for Buddy Guy and Los Lobos at the Maryhill Amphitheatre. During all this time I went to France, Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey as well as Canada to play. Paris was my favorite especially the 2nd visit. I am currently working on Volume 2 of American Folkie and play weekends at various venues. In 2004 I began to teach guitar at the Multnomah Art Center. I re-released 5 projects onto CD. In 2005 one of the projects The Last Sunset on a Treetop Serenade was received so well that the first song was included on the Rainbow Sampler Volume 23 soon to be out.

WINE AND JAZZ: BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU PARTY

LE BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU EST ARRIVE!

At one past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, from little villages and towns over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau begin their journey through a sleeping France to Paris for immediate shipment to all parts of the world. Banners proclaim the good news: Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! "The New Beaujolais has arrived!" One of the most frivolous and animated rituals in the wine world has begun.By the time it is over, over 65 million bottles, nearly half of the region's total annual production, will be distributed and drunk around the world. It has become a worldwide race to be the first to serve to this new wine of the harvest. The race from grape to glass may be silly, but half the fun is knowing that on the same night, in homes, cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars and bistros around the world, the same celebration is taking place.

ZEPHYR

Zéphyr (zay-feer), formerly known as Tourbillon, features the vocal talents of Lisa Grimm, local French teacher and francophile. Along with the talented Thomas Niebrzydowski on guitar, Jesse Engum on bass, and Joe Root on accordion & keyboards.Zéphyr specializes in uniquely French cabaret & jazz music. Their repertoire includes popular tunes in the style of chanson française, bal-musette, love songs circa 1940-1970 as well as original compositions. Recall the sounds of Edith Piaf, Serge Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot, among others. Imagine a summer beach vacation and then having to leave it-au revoir-for the rainy streets of Paris.Remember the little neighborhood we used to know,in Saint-Germain des Près, and how it will never be the same without you, or the ghost of lovers dancing, with light and love in their eyes. Or how about that driving tune that you just can’t get out of your head? Padam! It obsesses you, reminding you of all things forgotten. Do dead loves ever finish dying? How about dancing the Javanaise, as we love each other for the time of a song? L’amour. La danse. La musique. Each song tells a story, and Zéphyr creates a loungy sway, a decadent, relaxing soundlandscape incorporating gypsy, swing and bossa nova influences into their guitar-bassaccordian- piano-flute and French vocal combination.

FLAMENCO

Flamenco is the song, dance and music with its origins in Andalucia, Spain. Originally it is believed that it evolved as a result of the inquisition and a blend of the music of Arabs, Jews, and Gypsies that were persecuted at that time. It is comparable to blues/jazz of America, having a mournful side as well as its opposite. It has evolved tremendously in the last 40 years, mostly due to the influence of guitarist Paco de Lucia, who began using instrumentation never used before in flamenco and considered the leader of modern flamenco composition.

A JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH POPULAR MUSIC

A Journey through French Popular Music of the 20th Century...
Bonjour,
By performing in cafés, clubs and festivals while living in France, I have played many covers of French artistslike Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Edith Piaf, Serge Gainsbourg, Cabrel, etc...Since arriving in the USA morethan a year ago, I still enjoy playing these same songs to an American speaking audience; always explainingbefore hand the historical, creative and cultural context during which these tunes were played. People love it!I also gave a talk for the Alliance Française (a Portland organization for Francophiles) where I went throughFrench popular music of the 20th Century, illustrating it through live songs.Coming from a family background where I felt the importance of education (my mother is a recently retired 30year English teacher and my younger brother is today a middle school teacher), I was also looking for ways to getinvolved with community and school events in Portland. Knowing the value of music, especially in a time ofbudget cuts, I thought it would be a good idea to share this knowledge I have gathered over the years with youngstudents. The project I have proposed to Lincoln High School and this school's community is a 2 day/3 hour course (oncein French and once in English) taking students on a journey through French popular music of the 20th Century. This class would take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm and would show how musiciansare influenced by the era in which they live in.It starts in 1900 with the building of the Eiffel Tower and the challenges facing this new century. Next we wouldexamine how World War I has influenced French music (the American GIs brought Jazz to Paris), whyJosephine Baker was so popular with her song « J'ai deux amours » during the 1930's and how censorshipoperated during the second World War in a divided country occupied by the Nazis. After this devastating conflict, new artists emerged mostly from Saint Germain des Près, a creative neighborhood of Paris. Then during the 60'smany French artists were fascinated by Rock N' Roll and copied it as much as they could. It was the Yéyés era...Amercian popular music such as Disco or even Hip Hop has always inspired French artists. I'm sure students would be fascinated to learn about all the « musical bridges » that exist between those two cultures. Being of dualcitizenship (my father is French and my mother American) this inspires me even more to talk about it.To illustrate this course and make it interactive I would play live songs with my guitar of French artists (since1900 up to today) live with my guitar. I would also show videos of other musicians. To encourage audience participation I would perform one or two songs with musicians from Lincoln high school.I hope this project motivates you as much as it does me.Kind regards,Eric John Kaiser http://www.ericjohnkaiser.com/

Piedmont - Poderi Elia - Barbera d'Alba 2004 - 100% Barbera d'Alba
From the village of Neive, comes Poderi Elia's classically styled Barbera d'Alba.
Made with vines that are nearly 90 years old, the purity and confidence of the fruit are stunning. The freshly pressed cranberries on the nose are accentuated by lush, bright pomegranate. As always with the wines of Federico Stella, the tannins are very soft and integrated, always granular and unimposing. A blissful wine with poached Salmon.

Sicily - Martorana - Colonna 2006 - 50% Nero d'Avola, 50% Syrah
To think of Sicilian reds, one's mind almost immediately goes to Nero d'Avola andSyrah. Made prolifically, and sometimes very well, on the Mediterranean's most famous island, the two are a powerhouse when deftly combined in the hands of a seasoned expert.
Giuseppe Martorana, one of the smallest and most energetic producers in Sicily, truly understands his land and its relationship to these dense-fleshed varietals that grow so effortlessly on his ocean-front vineyard. Lush, rubenesque, plummy fruit is layered in between whiffs of Moroccan spice, mincemeat and even sweet ginger.

Trentino - De Tarczal 2005 - 100% Cabernet Franc
The De Tarczal family has been making wine since the 1600's, specializing in classic local varietals, some of which are virtually extinct. Unlike many of their neighbors, they do not sell to co-ops, even though they are very small. In Trentino, Cabernet Franc is a classic varietal, considered as "local" as, say, Moscato Giallo.
Climatically, the area near Rovereto is very similar to Pomerol, and the results are striking. Oldvine winemaking, naturally low-yields, high-altitude, and valley ventilation make this Cabernet Franc a celebration of the varietal, as clean as stained glass, and equally artistic and expressive.

WINE TASTING THIS WEEK END

Free Wine Tastings this Weekend.

Exclusive Wines from Italia with Small Vineyards.

CAMPANIA - Tenuta Ponte 2007 - 100% Coda di Volpe
An ancient, full-bodied varietal from Campania, Coda di Volpe is virtually unknownin the States, but shares much of the appealing characteristics of Italy's most popular whites. Grown on cliffs over-looking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the wine is the perfect result of its location -- fresh, salty, rocky, and ripe from the intense Napolitano sun. Aromas of plantain, lemongrass and sweet basil swirl in the glass, and complement any seafood fare or Asian cuisine. A great value.

TUSCANY - Rigoloccio Rosso 2006 - 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Alicante.
A highly inspired blend of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, and Alicante, this wine marries medium-bodied approachability with exceptional zesty flavor. From the famed Maremma in Tuscany, the beautiful Rigoloccio estate has a sweeping view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and borrows much of the wine's fresh, salty and pepper complexion from the big blue. This wine is slathered with flavor, extract, balance, minerality, tannins, length, deft cooperage, color and smile-inducing layers on the palate. Dusty and slightly herbaceous, Rigoloccio benefits greatly from the famous pyrite mine carved below the root system -- the flinty.

VENETO - Trevisol Prosecco Frizzante - 100% Prosecco.
From Valdobiaddene's grand family of prosecco, Paolo Trevisiol delivers an absolutedelight with this delicate, pleasing prosecco made in a wonderful, traditional frizzante style. Tiny, delicate bubbles deliver flinty aromas of acacia flower and Meyer lemon, all with Trevisiol's trademark minerality borne of his remarkable moraine soil. Finished with a classic French-style crown closure, the wine is perfect for lighter summer fare, especially oysters, fried chicken, or fresh fruit.
